There are moments when we know something is stirring inside—stress, hope, insecurity, motivation—but we can’t quite put the feeling into words. The If It Could Speak exercise was created to make that process easier. It offers a creative way to imagine what our emotions, experiences, and even everyday objects might say if they had a voice of their own If It Could Speak.

Prompts like:

  • If my anxiety could speak…

  • If my healing could speak…

  • If my past choices could speak…

  • If my inner child could speak…

invite a kind of honesty we don’t always reach through traditional reflection. Many people find that when they “give the emotion a voice,” the message that comes out is surprisingly clear.

The worksheet also includes a brief introduction to externalizing—a research-supported skill that helps separate who you are from what you’re experiencing. That shift from “I am anxious” to “Anxiety is showing up right now” can open the door to clarity, compassion, and healthier choices.

If you’re looking for a way to help clients access insight quickly and safely, this exercise fits beautifully into individual or group work. It’s simple, flexible, and often leads to meaningful conversations.

This worksheet is available to Taking the Escalator members, along with other tools designed to support deeper awareness and intentional change. If this kind of reflective, creative approach speaks to you, you might find a lot of value in what’s waiting inside.
