(Worksheet + Short Video)

Before diving into today’s topic, check out the quick introductory video created to accompany this worksheet. It sets the tone, explains the core ideas, and helps viewers get the most out of the activity:

Why Gratitude Needs More Than the Present Moment

We often think of gratitude as something we feel only right now. While present-moment appreciation is important, it’s only one part of a much larger picture. Gratitude can also help us understand where we’ve been and give us hope for where we’re going.

When we look at gratitude not just as a feeling but as a timeline, something powerful happens. We see our personal story in a fuller, more compassionate way: the past that shaped us, the present that sustains us, and the future we’re actively growing toward.

This new worksheet, Traveling Through Time with Gratitude, is built around that idea by offering a simple, creative method for exploring gratitude across an entire life story.

A Different Way to Explore Gratitude

This activity invites us to mentally “travel through time” and identify meaningful moments across three stages:

1. Past Gratitude — “What Taught Me”

Gratitude from the past isn’t about pretending difficult times were pleasant. It’s about recognizing the lessons, strengths, or people that helped us grow.

The worksheet encourages reflection on:

  • Challenges that made us stronger

  • Mistakes that taught us something we still rely on

  • People who shaped who we are

  • Things we didn’t appreciate back then but value now

2. Present Gratitude — “What Grounds Me”

Here, we explore the supports, routines, relationships, and moments that help us to stay steady today, even if life isn’t perfect.

Prompts include:

  • What gives our life meaning right now

  • People who help use to feel stable in times of need

  • Small things that lift our mood

  • Things we appreciate today

Present-moment gratitude strengthens mindfulness and boosts emotional balance.

3. Future Gratitude — “What Awaits Me”

This section is about hope and being grateful in advance for the goals we’re working toward and the growth ahead.

The worksheet guides us to imagine:

  • Something we're looking forward to feeling grateful for

  • A future accomplishment we will one day appreciate

  • A moment we will be proud to look back on

  • Reasons we are are hopeful about the future

This forward-looking gratitude helps build motivation, optimism, and commitment to positive change.

The Spinner: A Fun, Unexpected Twist

One unique element of this activity is the Time Spinner — an interactive way to land on different life stages and challenge yourself to search for gratitude in places you might not normally look. The spinner categories include every age range from newborn to older adulthood, encouraging you to reflect across your entire personal timeline. This keeps the exercise dynamic and often brings up meaningful memories or insights that wouldn’t otherwise surface.

“Gratitude turns our past memories into wisdom, our present moments into peace, and our future hopes into motivation.”
