Now Hiring: My Future Self (A Recovery-Focused Group Therapy Activity)

Help your clients apply to "get hired" for the life they truly want

At Taking the Escalator, we’re always looking for creative, engaging ways to help clients reflect, connect, and grow. Our newest group activity puts a playful twist on a serious topic—building a better life through positive change and self-awareness, based on the Taking the Escalator methodology for building insight and motivation.

Imagine this: You’re applying for a position in your own future—one that’s centered around balance, healing, and purpose. What qualifications do you bring? What strengths have you built through your struggles? What areas still need attention?

In this mock "job application and interview" style activity, participants explore:

  • Personal strengths and life experience

  • Growth areas they’re working on

  • Their “résumé” of resilience

  • A vision for what they want next

  • Finally, an inspiring new "job title", like:→ Director of Calm in Chaotic SituationsChief Officer of Second ChancesMood & Emotion Regulation Manager

Why It Works

This activity blends metaphor, introspection, and creativity to help clients take ownership of their personal positive change journey. It’s adaptable for different levels of engagement and can be facilitated as a discussion, worksheet, or interactive role-play.

Facilitators receive special guidance on how to tailor the activity based on the group’s insight and motivation level—whether you’re working with those new to recovery or more experienced clients.
