Social media has changed the way the world communicates. Every day, people share updates, opinions, celebrations, frustrations, and struggles with the click of a button. Behind those posts are real people with real emotions, making social media an interesting and relevant topic for group therapy and a great format for generating group interaction.
The Group Feed is a new interactive worksheet from Taking the Escalator that transforms the familiar experience of social media into a meaningful group therapy activity. Participants work together to react to posts, leave comments, reply to one another, and experience how online conversations can unfold in a safe, therapeutic setting.
The activity naturally opens the door to discussions about communication, empathy, assumptions, validation, conflict, support, and the impact our words can have on others and on our own mental health. Because participants are actively interacting rather than simply answering questions, conversations that take place during this exercise will develop in ways that feel authentic and engaging.
The worksheet is flexible enough to be used with adolescents, adults, mental health groups, substance use treatment, and many other settings where communication and relationships are important topics.
Members receive The Group Feed worksheet, complete with facilitator instructions, a realistic group feed template, discussion post ideas, and processing questions to help guide meaningful conversations.
