Every day, we face decisions that can move us forward, pull us backward, or send us down the same old roads we’re trying to avoid. ā€œTraffic Signs for Changeā€ is a therapy activity designed to make those decisions easier to see and understand. By using familiar road signs as metaphors, this exercise helps us recognize patterns, set boundaries, practice patience, and commit to healthier directions.

The activity begins with a guided worksheet that pairs each sign—STOP, ONE WAY, U-TURN, YIELD, DO NOT ENTER, and DETOUR—with short psychoeducation and reflection prompts. These prompts help participants explore their habits, emotional responses, and decision-making patterns in a way that is both structured and motivational. Each section ends with a micro-commitment, turning insight into action.

Once the worksheet is complete, the activity shifts into a creative closing exercise: designing your own road signs. Participants can draw, sketch, or describe signs that represent what they need to remember in different areas of life—relationships, work, health habits, boundaries, motivation, self-talk, and more. This artistic element adds humor, meaning, and personal expression to the process, reinforcing the lessons in a memorable way.

ā€œTraffic Signs for Positive Changeā€ works well in group therapy, outpatient programs, individual sessions, or workshops. It offers a flexible blend of education, reflection, and creativity—helping people ā€œseeā€ their choices in a new light and chart a clearer, safer path forward.
